Climate Change - think globally, act locally
This past school year I had the opportunity to take an honors seminar on a subject that has been controversial in the past but now could be a major problem, climate change. The course, Climate Change – Think Globally, Act Locally, was essentially a two-part seminar, the first being that we learned about the physical mechanisms of climate change itself, discussing many problems as well as possible outcomes, all on a global scale. The second half, as the course title states, was more of a focus on what we can do as concerned citizens in our own community. For this part of the course, the class was split into four different teams and each team was tasked with researching local nonprofit organizations that do work related to climate change mitigation and picking one organization to champion and present for at the end of the course in front of a panel of judges who had a sum of money to distribute. These presentations were the culmination of a lot of in-class discussion, research, and a lot hard work in and out of the classroom. My group chose to champion Camp Joy, a youth camp outside of Cincinnati that teaches children, especially in under served populations, about the importance of the environment.
Below is my group’s presentation, which I have chosen to include to help document this experience because of all the hard work we put in on researching Camp Joy, visiting their grounds, and making the presentation. I was especially happy when we chose to champion Camp Joy because I went to a summer camp there while in grade school and it most definitely helped me develop the sense of respect I have for the environment today. When we visited, we also had the opportunity to speak with one of the executive staff members at Camp Joy, Kevin Hackman, who is the Marketing Director there. That video can be found below the presentation.
