2016-2017 YEAR IN REVIEW
Another year is in the books now, my final one as an undergraduate that started this past summer (Summer 2016). Last summer I was on my third (and final) co-op rotation at a company called Medpace on Cincinnati’s east side. I filled the role of junior intern there, and along with 6 other students from UC, UD, and OSU, performed a variety of tasks for a number of departments within Medpace. I did a lot of work revolving around training and development of new employees in certain roles as well as some marketing and human resources projects. Medpace was a very cool and exciting company to work for in my opinion – I was able to attend two quarterly company meeting in my time there before the company went public, the atmosphere was very relaxed, and there was plenty to do with the great people there outside of work. Since it was summertime, there was a grill out for lunch every other week in addition to the free salad bar every day, there was a company golf outing (that my team placed second in), and even a basketball league that I played in twice a week most of the time. I wouldn’t be opposed to going back to work there, depending on future arrangements, but more on that later.
Moving into the fall semester, I was gearing up for the last academic year of my undergraduate career in biomedical engineering. The semester started, as every year of my four at UC have, with the annual UHP Welcome Retreat. This year I had the opportunity to be one of the Retreat Coordinators for the retreat, and you can read more about that under the “Other” tab above. Also this year, I served as the Comedy Program Director for the Programs and Activities Council (PAC) on campus. I had four stand-up shows this year, all successful, and it was a real pleasure to work with some of the industry’s finest such as Deon Cole and Brent Morin. I also started my senior design capstone project under Dr. Haworth during this semester and was able to put together a new formula and protocol for a different type of droplets to be acoustically vaporized (acoustic droplet vaporization – ADV) in our lab. The highlight of my fall semester however, was taking an honors seminar about sports and culture that included a trip to Melbourne, Australia in December. You can read more about that class and the trip under the “Honors Seminars” tab above.
This spring, I’ve been focused mostly on my academics and trying to get my capstone project to work, and hanging out with my friends during my last undergraduate semester. Over spring break, I was able to go on another Serve Beyond Cincinnati (SBC) trip, which was the same group I went to Costa Rica with sophomore year, but stayed domestic this time and helped rebuild some homes that had been effectively destroyed by flooding down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. That was a really fun trip because I enjoy getting down & dirty with manual labor every once in a while and because we also got to meet and hang out with some really cool people from other schools as well during the week. As I near the end of the semester here, I’m still a little behind on my project, but should be able to catch up soon once everything else is over with. Moving forward, I have officially been accepted into UC’s Graduate School to finish the 28 or so credit hours I have left to earn my MBA and so that’ll keep me in school through December and the end of the year. After that, I have no plans as of now but would love to travel abroad again or do an extend trip around the US to some cool places I’ve yet to visit. It’s been another great year, an unbelievable four years of undergraduate work here at UC, and I hope there is more of the same to come. Thanks for reading!
